Class: Introduction to Charcoal Drawing

Keeler puts her love for inspiring young artists into practice with an introduction to charcoal drawing for teenagers. The class intends to strengthen drawing skills and ability to express creativity. Keeler demonstrates the application of line, value, contour and the principles of composition.

Let’s Go Fishing! Drop-in Saturday with your whole family and make a fishing game together. Instructor Cozette Phillips will demonstrate printing techniques and paper construction in this class. Each family will work together to create a unique, artistic and exciting game. Art and Fun for the whole family.


Cozette Phillips, Education Coordinator at Art Reach, recently moved to Michigan from Texas where she was a Resident artist in the Metal and Sculpture Department at Midwestern State University. While there, she taught both Metals and Sculpture in the Continuing Education Department. Cozette earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in sculpture and illustration at the Columbus College of Art and Design. She continued her education at Missouri State University where she found a passion for metals. In 2010 she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in the Metals program at the State University of New York. Following graduate school, Cozette was a Resident Artist at The School for American Crafts at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. In 2011, she completed an Artist Residency at Lademoen Kunsternerverksteder in Norway. She has exhibited her artwork extensively in New York, throughout the US and internationally. Recently, she was awarded the LIAEP Grant.

Make your Mark in Art! This exciting class taught by local artist, Steven Hawkes will spark your creativity. Learn to transform the surface of wood by transferring images through pyrography. The complete process from beginning design to finishing and sealing will be taught in this two-class course.


Steven Hawkes is a Mid-Michigan painter and art gallery manager who has studied at Alma College and received many local and national honors for his art. After 20 years of painting, he fell in love with pyrography (wood burning). Hawkes works with clients to decide on the best way to provide a beautiful piece of pyrography art that lasts a lifetime. Selecting images from photos, he burns a piece of art that can be enjoyed for generations.


Awesome Acrylics: Water and Reflections

Cool off this summer at Art Reach with four weeks of acrylics and fun. We will learn how to paint water scenes and reflections with Instructor Julie B. Wells. This class is designed for all skill levels and will introduce a variety of techniques that are sure to make a splash.

Julie B. Wells specializes in recycled and found objects art, soft sculpture and mixed media. She has had art exhibitions in Arizona and published art-related articles in Schoolarts Magazine. She was an art teacher in Arizona prior to moving to Michigan. Wells has a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Education K-12 with art and reading endorsements  from Northern Arizona University.

Learn how to maximize the potential of your camera and creativity. Many of your photos go unused, but what if you could turn those photos and words into a book? In this two-session course, gain an understanding of Web sites and software that help you publish your creation.


 Since retiring from Alma College in 2011, Oakley Traynor has devoted most of his time to his passion, fine art photography. In the short time he has been entering juried art shows, he has earned recognition for his photography. His first entry earned a Juror's Recognition Award in the 2012 West Michigan Regional Art Competition and a photo collage was included in the 2012 Greater Michigan Art Exhibition. Some of his photography tends to reflect on the effects of time and nature on man's attempts to alter and, sometimes, warp his surroundings. Other images relate the beauty of the untouched natural world. Traynor has a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from Central Michigan university.

Learn how to create a photorealistic image of the beloved animal in your life. In this four-week course we will work from photos to create a realistic painting of your pet in acrylics. Learn how to convey the emotion and personality of your pet through paint as we study the symbolic and representational treatment of the animal through historical and contemporary examples. Plein Air, Landscape Painting with Oils

Paint with oils surrounded by the beauty of nature. Local artist Rex Tower will share his knowledge of landscape painting. With his instruction and guidance we will create dramatic paintings emphasizing light and the diversity of Mt. Pleasant’s landscape.

Rex Tower tries to capture the feel of the landscape, concentrating on the contrasts between the light and shadows. He likes to use the impressionistic style of short brush strokes and lots of color showing the beauty of the world around us and using the light as a focal point. He loves plein air painting as well as in-studio. A graduate of St. Joseph High School, Tower holds degrees from Central Michigan University and Kendall School of Design. He was a teacher in the Shepherd Public Schools for 30 years. He has exhibited at Art Reach of Mid Michigan Gallery, Mercury Head Gallery, Dreese Gallery and the Governors Exhibit in Connueat, OH.
