Fundamentals of Drawing 1 (Week 5)

The Fundamentals of Drawing are a series of classes with instructor and artist Julie Tyslicky, created as in-depth skill-building classes that will teach you to draw from the ground level. If you have always wanted to know how to draw but didn’t know where to begin; whether you want to learn to draw in your own home just for pleasure; if you want to develop skills to enter juried shows or build your skills for painting, this is an excellent series for you to get started down that path.

“No More Stolen Sisters” Exhibit Reception

Art Reach is hosting a REDress Exhibit titled “No More Stolen Sisters” in The Morey Family Gallery from April 29-May 7, 2024.

A reception will be held from 5-6:30 pm on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Art Reach of Mid Michigan in The Morey Family Gallery, 111 E. Broadway in downtown Mt. Pleasant. All exhibits and receptions are free and open to the public.

The REDress Project was begun in 2011 by Métis artist Jaime Black after attending a conference where she heard about the hundreds of missing and murdered women in Canada. Her first display of red dresses was at the University of Winnipeg and its purpose was to bring attention to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The dresses are displayed empty so they invoke the missing women who should be wearing them. The color red is symbolic: it is said to be the only color the spirits can see, it relates to our lifeblood, and it represents both vitality and violence.

The display of the red dresses provides an opportunity for dialogue about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIW) and offers a space for voices to be heard and stories to be told.

In our community, a coalition of representatives from the Saginaw Chippewa Behavioral Health Victims Services, the Zonta Club of Mt Pleasant, RISE Advocacy, McLaren Hospital and the CMU Museum of Cultural And Natural History are joining together to recognize the National Day of Remembrance for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People. There will be red dress displays throughout our community during the month of May and community events at Art Reach of Mid Michigan and the Broadway Park. This will involve a series of red dress displays throughout our community during the month of May as well as related events. The official observance of Red Dress Day is May 5.

“Echoes and Mirrors and Metaphors for Love” Staged Reading

Art Reach of Mid Michigan will host a Staged Reading of “Echoes and Mirrors and Metaphors for Love” by local author Michael J. Shuler. The reading begins 3 pm, Saturday, May 11, 2024, in The Morey Family Gallery, 111 E. Broadway in downtown Mt. Pleasant. This event is free and open to the public. Recommended for adult audiences only.

“Echoes and Mirrors and Metaphors for Love” is a contemplative drama that explores the complexities of love and relationships through the intertwined lives of its characters. Set in the mid-1980s, the play unfolds in ten scenes, each delving into the personal narratives and emotional landscapes of the characters.

The story revolves around a MAN in his mid-20s, who grapples with the remnants of a past relationship and the allure of an instant family with a single mother. A WOMAN, also in her mid-20s, reflects on her series of romantic encounters and substance-fueled college days, seeking something more substantial in her life. Their paths cross, leading to introspection and revelations about what they truly seek in a partner.

Through dialogues and monologues, the characters confront their desires, illusions, and the realities of their choices. The play uses metaphors and symbolic elements, such as the colors of their clothing and the settings, to mirror their emotional states and the echoes of their past decisions.

The narrative structure of “Echoes and Mirrors and Metaphors for Love” invites the audience to reflect on the nature of love, the search for connection, and the mirrors we hold up to ourselves and others in the pursuit of understanding and intimacy.

Michael J. Shuler is a local author in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. He is originally from Chicago and has lived as far north as civilization can be found in the Upper Peninsula. His writing is inspired by his passion for science fiction, comic books, and his own life experiences. His first novel, How We Saved the World on Our Summer Vacation, can be found on Amazon, through Barnes and Noble, and on the shelves of Sleepy Dog Books. As the resident artist of Pleasant City Coffee, he can frequently be found there, struggling with writer's block.

Fundamentals of Drawing 1 (Week 9)

The Fundamentals of Drawing are a series of classes with instructor and artist Julie Tyslicky, created as in-depth skill-building classes that will teach you to draw from the ground level. Fundamentals 1 starts with teaching you how to go about handling the nervousness and fear of making a mistake, moving on to contour line drawing, observation and its importance to the drawing process, layering graphite to create different values, why values are needed, highlight and shadow and the role they play, negative space, and finally putting it all together to create drawings you will be pleasantly surprised you can actually create.

If you have always wanted to know how to draw but didn’t know where to begin; whether you want to learn to draw in your own home just for pleasure; if you want to develop skills to enter juried shows or build your skills for painting, this is an excellent series for you to get started down that path.

This 12-week series will be held from 3:30-5:30 pm Mondays, April 1-June 17 in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway St, Mt. Pleasant, MI.
