The live model will change poses frequently, so students can work on creating shorter, quicker sketches which involve more movement. This is helpful for small studies and getting a looser drawing style.

Introduction to Portrait Drawing (Week 4)

Students interested in improving their drawing skills in portraiture are invited to join instructor Matthew Grimmer for this 6-week course. Students will begin by exploring the basics of structure and linework, sketching small studies as they prepare for more developed portraits in later sessions.  We will cover how to build and shape in 3-D using pencils and will cover basic areas of drawing, such as overall composition, cross-hatching to create form, and making the most of light and shadow, all within the context of the figure.

The course will focus on achieving stylized anatomical-realism through a slow-paced practice involving drawing from life using mirrors while utilizing lessons based on measurements, comparison, and thoughtful mark-making. Each session will begin with a short demonstration followed by work time with individual instruction. By the end of the course, students should have an understanding of the anatomy of the head, the complexity of shapes that create the face, and its relationship to drawing their portraiture, as well as improved confidence in their pencil handling.

This course will be held weekly from 5:30-8 pm on Tuesdays, May 5-June 9, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

Show appreciation for some of our endangered flying friends that call Michigan home. Led by instructor Cheryl Meyer, you’ll focus on capturing the charm, movement, and personality of birds through expressive painting techniques in watercolor. Each week in this 4-session course will feature a different feathered friend, and this class will guide you in bringing them to life on paper.

Perfect for beginner to intermediate artists, we’ll explore watercolor fundamentals such as wet-on-wet, layering, and texture while also learning how to sketch dynamic bird forms, render feathers, and create harmonious backgrounds. This series helps build your skills and confidence in watercolor.

Junk Journaling: A Visual Diary of You

Come and experience the beauty, immediacy, and freedom of an art form that breaks all the rules. Led by mixed media artist Deborah Clark, you will learn how to compose a heartfelt journal using inexpensive resources and bits and scraps from your daily life. Learn the essential tools needed to start your own art journaling practice and explore a wide variety of tools to see which you love the most. Registrants will receive a fun list of junk journaling items to bring to class to create their first, fun pages in an easily constructed kraft paper journal that we’ll create together. No specific art skills are needed!

Future work sessions will include a short lesson to build additional skills, an ephemera exchange between students, and open studio work time and supplies to continue your junk journaling journey!

Paint the Pavement

Paint the Pavement

Come Paint the Pavement with us on Saturday, May 30, 2026, starting at approximately 10 am. We will be painting the intersections of Broadway & Main, Broadway & University, Broadway & Court, and Broadway & Franklin, in beautiful downtown Mt. Pleasant. It is not necessary to register to paint and the event is free to everyone. The event is funded in part through Destination Development Funds from the Mt. Pleasant Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Michigan Arts and Cultural Council, secured by the City of Mt. Pleasant.

Volunteer timeline:
7–10 am: Setup – Volunteers and staff will be taping out the design on the three intersections, hauling supplies from Art Reach to each intersection, and putting traffic barricades in place.
10 am-1 pm: Volunteers and staff will fill paint trays, direct painters to areas needing to be painted, and direct foot traffic. Community painters will be painting during this time.
1 pm (approximately): Cleanup (including putting the final touches on each intersection), cleaning brushes, tearing down paint stations, hauling supplies back to Art Reach, etc.

Crash Course in Charcoal (Day 1)

Join instructor Matthew Grimmer for a 2-session crash course in charcoal drawing. Students will learn the basics of building up a drawing using the properties unique to the medium. Students will learn to draw from life using a still-life setup by the instructor. In the first session, we focus on building loosely and identifying shapes and measurements early on, to establish a strong base for the second session. Here, we will finish our drawing by learning techniques such as line weight, shading, and creating an illusion of depth. This workshop is ideal for anyone looking to explore a new medium or learn to draw from life.

Wee Wednesday invites babies, toddlers, and young children to explore art in a relaxed, hands-on environment. Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, this bi-monthly class encourages curiosity and creativity through simple projects that introduce color, texture, and playful materials. Kids can paint, build, stamp, squish, swirl, sing, and experiment at their own pace while caregivers join in on the fun.

Painting Our Preserves: Starks Preserve

Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature while exploring the art of plein air watercolor painting with instructor and Chippewa Watershed Conservancy Artist in Residence awardee Cheryl Meyer. This course offers a unique opportunity to connect with the landscape as we paint in the protected natural areas of the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy preserves. Learn how to capture in watercolors the tranquil Chippewa River and the serene surroundings of Starks Preserve, Audubon Woods, Hiawatha Hills, and Halls Lake Natural Area.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, this class will guide you through the fundamentals of plein air painting, including sketching, color mixing, composition, and watercolor techniques. We’ll explore how to work with natural light, the changing weather, and the dynamic environment around us to create stunning, atmospheric pieces of art that reflect the beauty of our local Chippewa watershed preserves.

This course takes place from 9 am-noon on Fridays, June 5-26, at the following four Chippewa Watershed Conservancy preserves in Isabella County. Students may register for individual sessions or select the full four-session course for a discounted rate.

June 19: Bundy Hill

June 26: Halls Lake Natural Area

Note: all painting supplies will be provided. If you have supplies, we suggest one pan watercolor set for outdoors, assorted brushes, & water. In the event of rain, we may paint from a pop-up tent or reschedule. Determination will be made in the morning of each session.

Quilting for Beginners: Easy Street

Join instructor Tanya Ehrsam for this beginner workshop on instructional quilting. Following the “Easy Street” pattern, students will learn to cut and piece their quilt top, covering basics such as accurate measuring and rotary cutting, correct piecing, pressing, and trimming. A future workshop will demonstrate the final layering and quilting process. You will create a functional piece of art that can be used any time of year, depending on the color scheme. You will be provided with a supply list that includes the yardage of cotton fabric needed so the project can be tailored to your color preference. A $10 pattern fee is included in the class tuition.

This workshop will be held from 10 am-2 pm on Friday, June 5, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway, Mt. Pleasant, MI.

Students should bring their selected fabric and their own sewing machine. If you do not have a machine, Art Reach will provide one. Students should have some basic machine sewing experience. Students are welcome to bring a snack or lunch during the workshop. Open studio time will be provided for students who do not finish their quilt top and need a sewing machine to finish. A follow-up workshop titled “Make A Quilt Sandwich” on June 26 will instruct how to layer and finish your quilt top with machine quilting. Please register separately for follow-up class.

Comic Creators (Week 1)

In this four-week course, young artists will become creators of their own comic universe! We'll learn to draw using simple shapes and colors as we create characters and worlds while brainstorming with the class. Students will create a small comic to take home each week, which can be an independent story or part of a series that follows their character. Throughout each session, students will be able to follow along with local artist Matthew Grimmer as he demonstrates how to doodle from imagination and bring our ideas to life. At the end of class, students will have an expanded visual vocabulary and a strengthened ability to create and narrate visual stories.

Sewing for Kids: Pillowcases

Young artists looking to learn sewing skills on their summer break are invited to join instructor Tanya Ehrsam for this pillowcase workshop. You’ll learn how sewing machines work, including how to thread your needle, wind a bobbin, measure and cut fabric. You’ll finish by assembling your pillowcase for a fun and functional textile project. Students can bring fabric of their choice or select from the Art Reach stash. You can mix and match prints, upcycle old sheets, or purchase new yardage- the choice is yours! If you have a sewing machine you would like to learn on, you may bring it, or use an Art Reach machine.

Chippewa Watershed Conservancy will host June's Kids & Culture from 10 am until noon on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Sylvan Solace Preserve, located on Pickard Road in Deerfield Township (between Gilmore and Littlefield Roads).

Enjoy a fun scavenger hunt and learn more about the plants and animals that live in our forests! Participants will be led on a guided hike to explore the preserve while playing nature bingo. This is a great opportunity to discover the joys of being outdoors and become inspired to continue exploring the natural world.

Attendees at each Kids & Culture 2026 event will be entered into a monthly drawing for (4) day passes to the Soaring Eagle Waterpark in Mt. Pleasant.

Art Journaling: Therapeutic Methods

Join artist Deborah Clark and retired therapist Bobbi Vogelsang for this meaningful and therapeutic art journaling workshop. Deborah and Bobbi will guide participants in using creativity to process, express, and voice difficult feelings through art journaling. You’ll learn prompts and artistic techniques for channeling challenging images, thoughts, and feelings into art. This process is helpful for overcoming trauma, healing from difficult situations, and creating a healthy outlet to move forward.

Students will use upcycled books to create their journal and explore a variety of media to translate memories, images, and feelings into art. All supplies are provided-just bring an open mind!

Landscapes in Oil (Week 1)

Deepen your understanding of landscape painting with artist Matthew Grimmer. During this four-week course, students will learn the building blocks of creating dynamic, well-composed landscapes. Starting with sketches, students will practice draftsmanship and compositional studies to prepare their canvas for paint. We will cover how to use a variety of artistic tools, including but not limited to pens, pencils, watercolors, and cameras, to gather the information required to complete our oil paintings later in the course. Students will employ the “new” oil method, which involves a base layer of marble dust, oil, and pigment, followed by a detailed underpainting focused on values, layout, and linework. During the following weeks, we will shift our attention to more in-depth painting skills: color theory, brush handling, and working fat-over-lean, to name a few. A zine is a tiny, self-made booklet that can hold anything—stories, drawings, jokes, poems, facts, characters, or even secret messages. No experience is needed; just bring your imagination.

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Learn what zines are and see creative examples

  • Try easy folding techniques to turn one sheet of paper into a mini book

This course offers a unique opportunity to connect with the landscape as we paint in the protected natural areas of the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy preserves. Learn how to capture in watercolors the tranquil Chippewa River and the serene surroundings of Starks Preserve, Audubon Woods, Hiawatha Hills, and Halls Lake Natural Area.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, this class will guide you through the fundamentals of plein air painting, including sketching, color mixing, composition, and watercolor techniques. We’ll explore how to work with natural light, the changing weather, and the dynamic environment around us to create stunning, atmospheric pieces of art that reflect the beauty of our local Chippewa watershed preserves.

This course takes place from 9 am-noon on Fridays, June 5-26, at the following four Chippewa Watershed Conservancy preserves in Isabella County. Students may register for individual sessions or select the full four-session course for a discounted rate.

Where Light Meets Water

Capture the historical beauty of the lighthouses of our Great Lakes in watercolors with this skill-building workshop. Create a Quilt Sandwich

Join instructor Tanya Ehrsam for the next step in your quilting journey. If you took the “Easy Street” quilting class, or if you have an unfinished quilt top lying around, you will learn how to finish your quilt. Bring your chosen backing fabric, batting, and your finished quilt top to learn the layering, basting, and machine- or hand-quilting process to add reinforcement and texture. You will finish your quilt with double-edged binding to have a piece of functional fiber art that you can be proud to use and display.

Teen Open Studio is a relaxed, creative night just for teens—perfect for hanging out, making art, and enjoying some pizza. Whether you're into painting, drawing, or want to try something new, this is a great space to explore your creativity and meet other teen artists. Bring a project you’re working on or use our supplies to create something new. Open to all media! Teen Open Studio runs from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday, June 27, and takes place on the fourth Saturday of every month.

This program is a Teen Advisory Group (TAG) initiative designed to give teens space and support to explore their creativity. A suggested donation of $5 may be made in person for those attending. Knitting: One Block at a Time (Week 3)

Join instructor Tanya Ehrsam for a back-to-basics knitting course, broken into small bites. You will learn to knit a blanket, scarf, or blanket, one block at a time. Breaking down a large project into 1-2 blocks a week allows you to work up your project to the size you wish without losing steam. Students may create a blanket, wrap, or scarf to use around a campfire or in their favorite cozy space. 

This 3-week course takes place from 2:30-4:30 on Tuesdays, June 16-30, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at 111 E. Broadway St. in Mt Pleasant.

Comic Creators (Week 4)

In this four-week course, young artists will become creators of their own comic universe! We'll learn to draw using simple shapes and colors as we create characters and worlds while brainstorming with the class. Students will create a small comic to take home each week, which can be an independent story or part of a series that follows their character. Throughout each session, students will be able to follow along with local artist Matthew Grimmer as he demonstrates how to doodle from imagination and bring our ideas to life. At the end of class, students will have an expanded visual vocabulary and a strengthened ability to create and narrate visual stories.

Students interested in improving their drawing skills in portraiture are invited to join instructor Matthew Grimmer for this 6-week course. Students will begin by exploring the basics of structure and linework, sketching small studies as they prepare for more developed portraits in later sessions.  We will cover how to build and shape in 3-D using pencils and will cover basic areas of drawing, such as overall composition, cross-hatching to create form, and making the most of light and shadow, all within the context of the figure.

The course will focus on achieving stylized anatomical-realism through a slow-paced practice involving drawing from life using mirrors while utilizing lessons based on measurements, comparison, and thoughtful mark-making. Each session will begin with a short demonstration followed by work time with individual instruction. By the end of the course, students should have an understanding of the anatomy of the head, the complexity of shapes that create the face, and its relationship to drawing their portraiture, as well as improved confidence in their pencil handling.

Yarn Dyeing Workshop

Knitters and crocheters, boost your yarn stash and learn the science of dyeing with instructor Tanya Ehrsam. You’ll be supplied with 2 skeins of wool yarn and supplies to acid-dye vibrant custom colors, helping you hone your colorways to perfection. Students should bring some basic supplies that can be designated for future dyeing projects. All other supplies will be provided for a $25 supply fee (included in tuition).

Student supply list:

  • Rubber gloves (dishwashing gloves or multiple pairs of nitrile gloves)

  • Tongs

  • Stainless steel or glass 4qt+ pot/crock-pot–dedicated to dyeing

Sew What! Patchwork Pockets

Declutter your nightstand necessities and create a cute & functional patchwork pocket caddy for your bedside. Instructor Kim Bigard will guide beginners to machine sewing and quilting in constructing multi-pocketed layers in coordinating fabrics. Students will learn some basic patchwork skills, how to create a “quilt sandwich” with their layers and batting, and create simple quilted patterns to stabilize the layers. Students can bring their own sewing machine or use our studio machines. Assorted cotton fabrics are available to pick from, or students may bring an assortment of yardage or fat quarters to create their preferred colorway. This is a great way to use up fabric scraps!

Each caddy will use 4-5 fat quarters, a mix of yardage and charm packs, or approximately 1 ¼ yd of fabric total.

The class will learn the basics of plein air painting in watercolor and take our work to the streets of downtown Mt. Pleasant. Recreate historical architecture. Capture light and color in the moment. This is a recurring 4-week class for students who wish to hone their colored pencil skills further with artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky. Pressed Botanical Teacups

Join instructor Jenny Clark for an exploration of the natural world through pressed botanicals. Jenny will provide an assortment of floral and foliar specimens already pressed and dried, to be artfully arranged in framed teacup collage artworks. As every flower is unique, so are the resulting projects. Students will be guided in best practices for pressing their own botanicals to continue their journey in this medium. Gardening and nature enthusiasts will be delighted to have beautiful artworks displaying the intricate details and vibrant colors of the natural world preserved in glass. This is a lovely idea for a creative experience with a mother figure, just in time for Mother’s Day!

The CMU Museum of Cultural and Natural History will host May's Kids & Culture from 10 am until noon on Saturday, May 9, 2026, in Room 124 of Rowe Hall on the Central Michigan University campus in Mt. Pleasant. Get an up-close look at some of our favorite feathered friends while we learn about how adaptations help birds survive in a variety of environments. Gain a basic understanding of how to identify different species of birds as well as the habitats they can be found including your own backyards!

Attendees at each Kids & Culture 2026 event will be entered into a monthly drawing for (4) day passes to the Soaring Eagle Waterpark in Mt. Pleasant.

Wee Wednesday invites babies, toddlers, and young children to explore art in a relaxed, hands-on environment. Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, this bi-monthly class encourages curiosity and creativity through simple projects that introduce color, texture, and playful materials. Kids can paint, build, stamp, squish, swirl, sing, and experiment at their own pace while caregivers join in on the fun.

The program starts at 10 am, Wednesday, May 6, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

Introduction to Portrait Drawing (Week 1)

Students interested in improving their drawing skills in portraiture are invited to join instructor Matthew Grimmer for this 6-week course. Students will begin by exploring the basics of structure and linework, sketching small studies as they prepare for more developed portraits in later sessions.  We will cover how to build and shape in 3-D using pencils and will cover basic areas of drawing, such as overall composition, cross-hatching to create form, and making the most of light and shadow, all within the context of the figure.

The course will focus on achieving stylized anatomical-realism through a slow-paced practice involving drawing from life using mirrors while utilizing lessons based on measurements, comparison, and thoughtful mark-making. Each session will begin with a short demonstration followed by work time with individual instruction. By the end of the course, students should have an understanding of the anatomy of the head, the complexity of shapes that create the face, and its relationship to drawing their portraiture, as well as improved confidence in their pencil handling.

This course will be held weekly from 5:30-8 pm on Tuesdays, May 5-June 9, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

Suds, Scents & Succulents, Oh My!

Celebrate ahead of this Mother’s Day with a dose of spring freshness and greenery! Instructor Kim Bigard will guide you in creating handcrafted soy jar candles, cold process soap and finish with planting teacups with diminutive succulents. Selecting from an assortment of seasonal, floral, or food-forward scents, participants can match their creations to their individual preferences. Students will leave with a 16oz soy candle, a 1 lb. batch of vegan cold process soap and a dainty teacup planting. This is perfect for a fun afternoon out with friends or family, or to create a special handmade gift for a treasured mother figure.

Art Reach of Mid Michigan invites you to an evening of mystery, intrigue, and unforgettable entertainment at our annual Murder Mystery fundraiser.

Step into a world of fine art and deception at The Great Gallery Grab, an Art Heist–themed murder mystery set in a glamorous museum gallery. A priceless work of art has been stolen, and every guest is a potential suspect. As the evening unfolds, clues will surface, secrets will be revealed, and it will be up to you to help uncover the truth.

Guests will enjoy an interactive theatrical performance, a delicious catered dinner by Mountain Town Station, specialty drinks, and a silent auction featuring exciting travel experiences and unique items. Come dressed for a night at the gallery and prepare to immerse yourself in the mystery.

All proceeds from the evening support the programs of Art Reach of Mid Michigan, helping us inspire creativity and connection throughout our community.

Open Studio for Teens

Teen Open Studio is a relaxed, creative night just for teens—perfect for hanging out, making art, and enjoying some pizza. Whether you're into painting, drawing, or want to try something new, this is a great space to explore your creativity and meet other teen artists. Teen Open Studio runs from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday, April 25, and takes place on the fourth Saturday of every month.

This program is a Teen Advisory Group (TAG) initiative designed to give teens space and support to explore their creativity. A suggested donation of $5 may be made in person for those attending. Assorted supplies are free for use, including acrylic & watercolor paints, markers, colored pencils, pastels, paper and collage materials.

Join instructor Penny Leathley for an exploration of fused glass. To commemorate the emergence of spring, students will select from floral forms, colorful rods & frits, and utilize simple snipping tools on glass to create beautiful and functional miniature artworks. All supplies will be provided to create two small hanging suncatchers or ornaments, and projects will be fired off-site to be picked up at a later date. Take this opportunity to explore a new medium and begin your journey in fused glass!

Club Create is a program created in partnership with Michigan Arts Access for adults with disabilities. Club Create offers adults with disabilities hands-on experiences in the arts, led by professional artists. Club members participate in an art experience at each meeting and also have time to socialize with other club members.
