Creative Happy Hour: Fiber Arts
Join us for a unique and relaxed evening of creativity at our Creative Happy Hour! Intended to provide an open studio opportunity to get together with friends or like-minded artists, Creative Happy Hour is a weekly open studio session with a rotating media schedule.
On the second Friday of each month, you’re invited to come work on your fiber art projects—be it knitting, crocheting, weaving, or any other textile craft. Bring your current project or start something new with a group of other fiber artists. The goal is to have fun, experiment, and let your creativity flow freely.

Creative kids ages 6-12 are invited to join us for our first art camp of the summer season! Led by instructor Kassidy Thompson, students will be guided in a range of different techniques and unique projects. A diverse set of media will be offered, and students will have art and craft projects they will be able to create, take home, and show off! You may select each day you wish to attend or enroll in the full week for a discounted rate. Each day, a snack will be provided. Watercolor Landscapes (Week 3)
Join us for an immersive, skill-building 3-week course focused on creating stunning landscape paintings with watercolors. Led by instructor Cheryl Meyer, students will be encouraged to bring either their own landscape photos or come prepared with ideas of the scenery they would like to paint. The class will emphasize personal expression and creativity, allowing you to capture the essence and beauty of the natural world through your unique perspective.
You will work on larger paper throughout the course, providing ample space to bring your vision to life. Instruction will be centered on developing the finer details within your chosen landscapes, enabling you to enhance the depth and realism of your paintings.
While prior watercolor painting experience is recommended, it is not required to participate in this workshop.

Fundamentals of Drawing 1 (Week 12)
The Fundamentals of Drawing is a series of four 12-week skill-building courses with acclaimed artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky, designed to teach you to draw from the ground level. You’ll be provided a solid foundation in the essential techniques that every artist needs to know, and help you develop much more advanced skills that can help enhance your art vocabulary, and painting skills, or possibly get you into juried shows.
Fundamentals of Drawing 1 starts the process at the ground level, teaching you how to go about handling the nervousness and the fear of making a mistake, moving on to contour line drawing, observation, and its importance to the drawing process. This course also teaches technical knowledge such as layering, understanding values, highlights and shadows, and negative space. If you have always wanted to know how to draw but didn’t know where to begin, this is an excellent series of classes for you!
This 12-week skill-building course takes place from 3-5:30 pm, Mondays, March 17-June 16 (skipping April 28 & May 26), in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

Intro to Crochet (Week 1)
Curious about crochet but not sure where to start? This beginner-friendly class is the perfect introduction to the relaxing and rewarding art of crochet. Instructor Lauren Fulk will teach you the essential techniques, including how to hold your yarn and hook, make a foundation chain, and master basic stitches like single crochet and double crochet. You’ll learn how to read a pattern, increase/decrease, and set the foundation to begin crocheting your own projects.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to read simple patterns and create your first handmade project—such as a cozy scarf, dishcloth, or more. Students should bring their choice of yarn and assorted crochet hook(s).

Lunchtime Flash Fiction (Week 1)
Take a creative break in the middle of your day with instructor Cheryl Meyer to practice the art of succinct storytelling. Writers of all experience levels will learn the craft of short-shorts, or flash fiction (stories of less than 1000 words), and hone their skills in creating impactful narratives within a limited word count. This workshop will introduce writers to the form and utilizing prompts and writing exercises, practice the precision and focus of flash fiction narrative. Bring a lunch if you choose and get creative!

Introduction to Soft Pastels (Week 3)
Join instructor Matthew Grimmer for an introduction to soft pastels. This course is designed to teach students how to draw from life while giving them an understanding of how to utilize color theory and the medium itself. You'll learn to use color to portray lights and shadows and how to pair colors to achieve harmony within a composition. You’ll also cover draftsmanship and drawing from sight so students can hone their realistic drawing techniques.
Over the course, students will build a drawing in successive layers, learning how to apply the appropriate layer each week; beginning with a focus on drawing techniques and ending with a heavier focus on color and blending. Students will work from the same still life over the course, so you have plenty of time to work on a single subject. This course is perfect for pastel beginners or intermediate level.

Paint the Preserves (Bundy Hill)
Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature while exploring the art of plein air watercolor painting with instructor Cheryl Meyer. This course offers a unique opportunity to connect with the landscape as we paint in the protected natural areas of the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy preserves. Learn how to capture in watercolors the tranquil Chippewa River and serene surroundings of Sylvan Solace, Hiawatha Hills, Bundy Hill and Halls Lake Natural Area.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, this class will guide you through the fundamentals of plein air painting, including sketching, color mixing, composition, and watercolor techniques. We’ll explore how to work with natural light, the changing weather, and the dynamic environment around us to create stunning, atmospheric pieces of art that reflect the beauty of our local Chippewa watershed preserves.
This course takes place from 9 am-noon on Wednesdays, June 4-25 at the following four Chippewa Watershed Conservancy preserves in Isabella County. Students may register for individual sessions or select the full three session course for a discounted rate.
June 25: Halls Lake Natural Area
Note: all painting supplies will be provided. If you have supplies, we suggest one pan watercolor set for outdoors, assorted brushes, & water. All students should bring a camp chair, drinking water, sunblock and bug spray. Each location will have a short hike in to the preserve.

Instructor Tanya Ehrsam invites young writers and artists to come together to craft their own stories and bring them to life through handmade books! Students will not only explore fiction writing but also learn the art of bookbinding to create their very own personal book to showcase their work. We’ll delve into character development, setting, establishing plot, and conflict, and find creative ways for resolution. Students will learn how to build their book with sewn-in signatures, create covers, and even make illustrations in their book for a creative finishing touch.

Wee Wednesdays
Toddlers (and parents!) are invited to join us for Wee Wednesdays! Wee Wednesdays is a bi-monthly program held from 10 to 11 am on the first and third Wednesday of the month. During each session, wee ones will gain art, reading, critical thinking, and tactile development skills. Each session will be a new project created on-site for your little ones to take home and enjoy!

Figure Drawing for Beginners (Week 3)
Join instructor Matthew Grimmer for an exploration of the human form. In this 4-week course, students will learn the elements of drawing from a live model. We will learn to capture the essence of the figure using charcoal on paper, starting with simple “stick-figure” compositions before finally moving to complete line drawings of the nude figure. This course has much to offer for both beginning and experienced artists. We will focus on capturing the figure through a variety of methods, which by the end of this course will leave students feeling confident drawing a completed figure, whether given two minutes or two hours.

Design and composition are talked about more, as well as our constant challenge of truly observing what we actually see instead of what we think we see.

Pressed Botanical Creations
Join instructor Jenny Clark for an exploration of the natural world through pressed botanicals. Jenny will provide an assortment of floral and foliar specimens already pressed and dried, to be artfully arranged in framed artworks. As every flower is unique, so are the resulting artworks. Students will be guided in best practices for pressing their own botanicals to continue their journey in this medium. Gardening and nature enthusiasts will be delighted to have beautiful artworks displaying the intricate details and vibrant colors of the natural world preserved in glass. All supplies are provided.

Club Create of Mid Michigan
Club Create is a Michigan Arts Access program for adults with disabilities. Club Create provides opportunities for adults with disabilities to have hands-on experiences in the arts provided by professional artists. Club members participate in an art experience at each meeting, as well as have time to socialize with other club members. Intro to Crochet (Week 3)
Curious about crochet but not sure where to start? This beginner-friendly class is the perfect introduction to the relaxing and rewarding art of crochet. Instructor Lauren Fulk will teach you the essential techniques, including how to hold your yarn and hook, make a foundation chain, and master basic stitches like single crochet and double crochet. You’ll learn how to read a pattern, increase/decrease, and set the foundation to begin crocheting your own projects.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to read simple patterns and create your first handmade project—such as a cozy scarf, dishcloth, or more. Students should bring their choice of yarn and assorted crochet hook(s).

Lunchtime Flash Fiction (Week 3)
Take a creative break in the middle of your day with instructor Cheryl Meyer to practice the art of succinct storytelling. Writers of all experience levels will learn the craft of short-shorts, or flash fiction (stories of less than 1000 words), and hone their skills in creating impactful narratives within a limited word count. This workshop will introduce writers to the form and utilizing prompts and writing exercises, practice the precision and focus of flash fiction narrative. Club Create of Mid Michigan
Club Create is a Michigan Arts Access program for adults with disabilities. Club Create provides opportunities for adults with disabilities to have hands-on experiences in the arts provided by professional artists. Club members participate in an art experience at each meeting, as well as have time to socialize with other club members. Figure Drawing for Beginners (Week 2)
Join instructor Matthew Grimmer for an exploration of the human form. In this 4-week course, students will learn the elements of drawing from a live model. We will learn to capture the essence of the figure using charcoal on paper, starting with simple “stick-figure” compositions before finally moving to complete line drawings of the nude figure. This course has much to offer for both beginning and experienced artists. We will focus on capturing the figure through a variety of methods, which by the end of this course will leave students feeling confident drawing a completed figure, whether given two minutes or two hours.

Paint the Preserves (Hiawatha Hills)
Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature while exploring the art of plein air watercolor painting with instructor Cheryl Meyer. This course offers a unique opportunity to connect with the landscape as we paint in the protected natural areas of the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy preserves. Learn how to capture in watercolors the tranquil Chippewa River and serene surroundings of Sylvan Solace, Hiawatha Hills, Bundy Hill and Halls Lake Natural Area.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, this class will guide you through the fundamentals of plein air painting, including sketching, color mixing, composition, and watercolor techniques. We’ll explore how to work with natural light, the changing weather, and the dynamic environment around us to create stunning, atmospheric pieces of art that reflect the beauty of our local Chippewa watershed preserves.

Watercolor Landscapes (Week 2)
Join us for an immersive, skill-building 3-week course focused on creating stunning landscape paintings with watercolors. Garden Peace Pole Workshop
Peace Poles or Garden Posts are an artful way to embellish your garden or natural spaces with vivid color and charm. Instructor and gardener Kim Bigard will lead you in painting treated 4”x4” posts to make an artful impact on your landscape. An assortment of stencils and inspirational images will be provided to help tailor your post to your taste. Exterior grade paints will be utilized to create a durable finish. All finished posts will be drilled, prepped with rebar for staking, and capped with a decorative post cap. Students can choose between a 4-ft post or (2) 2-ft posts. All supplies are provided.

Terrarium Workshop
Led by Paige Rothaus, this workshop guides participants through designing and crafting your very own miniature ecosystem. Join us for a unique and relaxed evening of creativity at our Creative Happy Hour! Intended to provide an open studio opportunity to get together with friends or like-minded artists, Creative Happy Hour is a weekly open studio session with a rotating media schedule.

Come Paint the Pavement with us on Saturday, May 31, 2025, starting at approximately 10 am. We will be painting the intersections of Broadway & Main, Broadway & University, Broadway & Court, and Broadway & Franklin, in beautiful downtown Mt. Pleasant. It is not necessary to register to paint and the event is free to everyone. The event is funded in part through Destination Development Funds from the Mt. Pleasant Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Michigan Arts and Cultural Council, secured by the City of Mt. Pleasant.
Volunteer timeline:
7–10 am: Setup – Volunteers and staff will be taping out the design on the three intersections, hauling supplies from Art Reach to each intersection, and putting traffic barricades in place.
10 am- Noon: Volunteers and staff will fill paint trays, direct painters to areas needing to be painted, and direct foot traffic. Community painters will be painting during this time.
Noon (approximately): Cleanup (including putting the final touches on each intersection), cleaning brushes, tearing down paint stations, hauling supplies back to Art Reach, etc.
Arts Market
Art Reach of Mid Michigan is excited to host our Arts Market from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday, May 31, 2025, with artist set-up beginning at 8:30 am. In the event of rain, the market will be held on Sunday, June 1.
This special event is a fundraising effort led by the Art Reach Teen Advisory Group (TAG) to support arts programming and leadership opportunities for teens in our community.
Artists 12 and up are invited to participate. A 10’ x 10’ space is available for $20, and a 20’ x 10’ space is available for $40. This is a great opportunity for makers, artists, and entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their creations while gaining real-world experience as vendors. Whether you're offering handmade goods, original artwork, or baked treats, we welcome your creativity!
To register, we’ll collect your name, phone number, email address, mailing address, age, and—for participants under 13—parent or guardian contact information. You’ll also be asked to describe the type of items you plan to sell.
*Please note that food items must comply with Michigan’s Cottage Food Law.
This event will occur simultaneously with our annual Paint the Pavement event. Join us for a fun and inspiring day celebrating youth talent and creativity while supporting a great cause!
Watercolor Techniques (Week 3)
Artists of all skill levels are invited to join instructor Cheryl Meyer for a four-week watercolor techniques course. Whether you are a beginner or intermediate watercolorist, you will explore a variety of methods to improve your watercolor proficiency and create vibrant and dynamic artworks. Expect to explore wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, gradient washes, and dry brushing. You will learn how to manipulate the flow of water and pigment to achieve stunning textures, tones, and effects. The course also covers the importance of composition, color theory, and layering to add depth and dimension to your pieces. If you have preferred brushes and watercolors, you are welcome to bring them, however, all supplies will be provided.
This course will be held from 2-4:30 pm, on Friday, May 16-30 in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.
