Wee Wednesdays
Wee Wednesday invites babies, toddlers, and young children to explore art in a relaxed, hands-on environment. Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, this bi-monthly class encourages curiosity and creativity through simple projects that introduce color, texture, and playful materials. Kids can paint, build, stamp, squish, swirl, sing, and experiment at their own pace while caregivers join in on the fun.

Designed with ages 0–5 in mind but welcoming to older siblings, Wee Wednesday is a flexible, sensory-rich art experience where every child can create, discover, and make a little joyful mess.
Fundamentals of Drawing 1 (Week 1)
The Fundamentals of Drawing is a series of four 12-week skill-building courses with acclaimed artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky, designed to teach you to draw from the ground level. You’ll be provided a solid foundation in the essential techniques that every artist needs to know, and help you develop much more advanced skills that can help enhance your art vocabulary, painting skills, or coach you in entering juried shows.
Fundamentals of Drawing 1 starts the process at the ground level, teaching how to translate observation to line and form. You’ll learn proportion and composition to gain confidence in your mark-making. This course also teaches technical knowledge such as layering, understanding values, highlights and shadows, and negative space. Weekly assignments and critiques will progressively build technical skill and visual understanding.
This 12-week course will be held from 6-9 pm on Wednesdays, January 7-March 25, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

Brews & Brushes is the perfect way to unwind, get creative, and enjoy a fun evening out. This monthly acrylic painting class is led by Brenda O’Brien, who provides step-by-step instructions to help you create a beautiful 16x20 masterpiece, no matter your skill level. Bring your favorite beverage, invite a friend, and let your imagination flow! We provide all the supplies you need—just come ready to paint and leave with a finished work of art. Brews & Brushes is a great way to explore your artistic side in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

Club Create of Mid Michigan
Club Create is a program created in partnership with Michigan Arts Access for adults with disabilities. Club Create provides opportunities for adults with disabilities to have hands-on experiences in the arts provided by professional artists. Club members participate in an art experience at each meeting, as well as have time to socialize with other club members. Club Create of Mid Michigan meets 5:30-7 pm on the second Thursday of each month. Caregivers are welcome to participate as well.

Still Life Sunday
Join us for a relaxed afternoon of creativity and be inspired by a beautiful selection of still-life objects—fruits, flowers, textures, and more by artist Matthew Grimmer. This workshop enables you to capture a unique, season-inspired still life through painting, drawing, or mixed media. The goal is to have fun, experiment, and let your creativity flow freely! This is intended to provide an open studio opportunity to get together with friends or like-minded artists. Students may bring their own art supplies, or Art Reach will provide a selection of media, including graphite, colored pencils, charcoal, acrylics, watercolors, and various papers.

Colored Pencil Drawing: Advanced (Week 1)
This is a recurring 4-week class for students who wish to hone their colored pencil skills further with artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky. Class is dedicated to advanced ideas and rotating projects, as well as critique for serious students building a portfolio and looking to exhibit their work. Students MUST have completed Intro to Colored Pencils with Julie Tyslicky to enroll in this class.

Knit Happens! (Week 1)
Join knitter Tanya Ehrsam to learn the fundamentals of knitting. Beginning knitters will learn a Hazelnut Latte sock pattern, while experienced knitters will delve into a Mocha Cable pattern.
Sock students will learn basic techniques such as casting on, knit and purl stitches, knitting in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles, and creating the various parts of a sock. Cable knitters will learn to master the technique of cable knitting, allowing them to add texture and dimension to their projects. Students will be able to purchase their own yarn, so it suits their taste. Patterns will be provided, with instructor guidance and homework built into the six-session course, so you’ll leave with a finished project and the confidence to continue with more advanced patterns in the future.
This 6-week course will be held weekly from 5:30-7:30 pm on Tuesday, January 13, and 5:30-6:30 pm, January 20-February 17, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway St. in Mt. Pleasant.

Introduction to Weaving (Week 1)
Explore the tactile nature of textiles with a beginner course in weaving with instructor Annie Croft. Students will work from 8×12-inch looms, utilizing a variety of yarns to create colorful, textured tapestries. Between classes, students will be sent home with supplies to work on their tapestry for finishing at the second session. All supplies are provided. This is a great way to use up yarn and fabric scraps for an artful addition to your home!

Portrait Drawing from Life (Week 1)
Students looking to improve their portrait drawing skills are invited to join instructor Matthew Grimmer for this 6-week course. Working from a live model each week, students will develop several drawings using charcoal and pencil, ranging from shorter to longer poses. We will learn how to create quick, loose sketches that capture the models' likeness, then, onto longer, more technical drawings where we learn to capture subtle details and shading. The course will focus on teaching a light-handed, anatomical, realistic style through a slow-paced practice that relies on measurements, comparison, and thoughtful mark-making.
This class is meant to cover the basic building blocks for portraiture and is directed towards beginners and intermediate skill levels. Advanced-level students may also be accommodated upon request. We will cover how to build and shape features in 3D and will cover basic areas of drawing, such as overall composition, cross-hatching to create form, and making the most of light and shadow, all within the context of the figure.
By the end of the course, students will have an understanding of the anatomy of the head, the complexity of shapes that create the face, and its relationship to drawing their portraiture, as well as improved confidence in their charcoal and pencil handling skills.

Sew What!
Want to learn how to use a sewing machine or just brush up on what your grandmother taught you 20 years ago? Join us for a beginner-friendly sewing class with instructor Cara Denison. Students will learn some basic sewing skills on sewing machines and create an improv quilt pillow case with an optional zipper!
Students must bring their own pillow form (18×18 inches is a typical size) so their pillowcase will fit correctly. If you have your own machine, you may bring it, or use one of ours. An assortment of fabric will be provided, or you may bring yardage or fat quarters in your choice of colors.

Upcycled Mitten Workshop
Don’t throw those shrunken wool sweaters away! Reuse your old clothing to make functional art in the form of upcycled mittens. Felted wool is perfect for sewing into these fun and funky mitts, which are naturally easy to care for and above all, warm. Instructor Kim Bigard will guide you in laying out your pattern, cutting pieces, and machine stitching them to make durable winter wear. Students are welcome to bring any old wool sweaters they wish to cut up (preshrink in the washer and dryer, please!), and we will have an assortment of pieces and fleece fabric available to choose from. If you have a sewing machine, you may bring it; otherwise, machines are available to borrow. Beginners are welcome.

Serenity Quilt Workshop (Week 1)
Join instructor Tanya Ehrsam for a simple, non-traditional way of creating curves in a quilt. No fitting or pinning curved pieces. Students will learn the Serenity pattern, cut and piece the quilt top and learn how to create your quilt sandwich for final quilting and binding. Come meet new friends, and sew yourself into serenity. You will leave with a functional piece of art that can be used daily or displayed on a wall.

Figure Drawing Club
Looking to enhance your drawing skills by working with a live model? Guided by instructor Matt Grimmer, students will have the opportunity to work from life with a model who will strike a variety of poses during this 3-hour, open studio drawing session. Artists are welcome to bring any dry medium art supplies they wish to work with. We will begin with shorter poses to create quick sketches before moving on to longer poses for more finished, detailed works.

Join instructor Cheryl Meyer to sample the art of memoir writing. This workshop will explore the essential tools & techniques to craft a powerful memoir. Melting Hearts: Fused Glass Creations
Join instructor Penny Leathley for a Valentine ’s-themed exploration of fused glass. To commemorate the holiday of love, students will select from heart shapes, colorful rods, and frits and utilize simple snipping tools on glass to create beautiful and functional miniature artworks. All supplies will be provided to create two small hanging suncatchers, and projects will be fired off-site to be picked up at a later date. Take this opportunity to explore a new medium and fall in love with fused glass!

Boho Wood-Burned Necklaces
Join jewelry artist Becki Brandow for a multi-media approach to jewelry making. Working from wood pendant blanks, you’ll be guided in woodburning techniques to add decorative flair to your pendant, and guided in beading your necklace. Selecting from an assortment of wood and glass beads, crystals, and more, you’ll learn how to design and lay out your pattern, string your necklace, and use tools to attach clamps. A protective finish is available for your wood pendant. All supplies provided and no experience necessary!

Teen Open Studio is a relaxed, creative night just for teens—perfect for hanging out, making art, and enjoying some pizza. Teen Open Studio runs from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday, January 24, and takes place on the fourth Saturday of every month.

Club Create of Mid Michigan
Club Create is a program created in partnership with Michigan Arts Access for adults with disabilities. Club Create provides opportunities for adults with disabilities to have hands-on experiences in the arts provided by professional artists. Club members participate in an art experience at each meeting, as well as have time to socialize with other club members. Club Create of Mid Michigan meets 10:30 am-12 pm on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Caregivers are welcome to participate as well.

The Fundamentals of Drawing is a series of four 12-week skill-building courses with acclaimed artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky, designed to teach you to draw from the ground level. You’ll be provided a solid foundation in the essential techniques that every artist needs to know, and help you develop much more advanced skills that can help enhance your art vocabulary, painting skills, or coach you in entering juried shows.

Try This! Tiny Tales
Learn to express yourself through writing with instructor Cheryl Meyer. This sample short story workshop will give a taste of the upcoming 3-week course, touching on basics such as characterization, setting, plot, tone, and diction. Students will be provided with prompts to utilize for writing exercises. All levels of experience and ability are welcome.

Portrait Drawing from Life (Week 3)
Students looking to improve their portrait drawing skills are invited to join instructor Matthew Grimmer for this 6-week course. Working from a live model each week, students will develop several drawings using charcoal and pencil, ranging from shorter to longer poses. We will learn how to create quick, loose sketches that capture the models' likeness, then, onto longer, more technical drawings where we learn to capture subtle details and shading. The course will focus on teaching a light-handed, anatomical, realistic style through a slow-paced practice that relies on measurements, comparison, and thoughtful mark-making.
This class is meant to cover the basic building blocks for portraiture and is directed towards beginners and intermediate skill levels. Advanced-level students may also be accommodated upon request. We will cover how to build and shape features in 3D and will cover basic areas of drawing, such as overall composition, cross-hatching to create form, and making the most of light and shadow, all within the context of the figure.
By the end of the course, students will have an understanding of the anatomy of the head, the complexity of shapes that create the face, and its relationship to drawing their portraiture, as well as improved confidence in their charcoal and pencil handling skills.

Mini Zines Workshop
Join instructor Annie Croft for a fun, hands-on workshop where creators of all ages can explore the playful world of mini zines! A zine is a tiny, self-made booklet that can hold anything—stories, drawings, jokes, poems, facts, characters, or even secret messages. No experience is needed; just bring your imagination.
In this workshop, participants will:
Learn what zines are and see creative examples
Try easy folding techniques to turn one sheet of paper into a mini book
Use drawing, writing, collage, and simple art materials to make their own zines
Leave with finished mini zines to keep or trade
All materials are provided, and the environment is relaxed, friendly, and suitable for kids, teens, and adults. Come create something small, meaningful, and totally your own!

Knit Happens! (Week 4)
Join knitter Tanya Ehrsam to learn the fundamentals of knitting. Beginning knitters will learn a Hazelnut Latte sock pattern, while experienced knitters will delve into a Mocha Cable pattern.
Sock students will learn basic techniques such as casting on, knit and purl stitches, knitting in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles, and creating the various parts of a sock. Cable knitters will learn to master the technique of cable knitting, allowing them to add texture and dimension to their projects. Students will be able to purchase their own yarn, so it suits their taste. Patterns will be provided, with instructor guidance and homework built into the six-session course, so you’ll leave with a finished project and the confidence to continue with more advanced patterns in the future.

Suds & Scents: Handmade Candles & Soap
Looking for something handmade for the holidays? Join instructor Kim Bigard for a seasonal experience in creating handcrafted soy jar candles and cold process soapmaking. Selecting from an assortment of seasonal, floral, or food-forward scents, participants can match their creations to their individual preferences. Students will leave with a 24oz soy candle and a 1 lb. batch of vegan cold process soap. This is perfect for a fun afternoon out with friends or family, or to create special handmade gifts for loved ones.

Quilted Table Runners: Petoskey Snowflakes
Join instructor Tanya Ehrsam for an afternoon of instructional quilting. Following the pattern “Petoskey Snowflakes”, students will learn how to cut and piece their table runner top, layer batting, backing, and finish at home by quilting. You will create a functional piece of art that can be used any time of year, depending on the color scheme. You will be provided a supply list with the yardage needed of cotton fabric so the project can be suited to your color preference.

Kids & Culture
The Central Michigan University Museum of Cultural and Natural History will host December’s Kids & Culture from 10 am until noon on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Rowe Hall in Room 101A at 650 E. Bellows St. in Mt. Pleasant. Free parking is available in Lot 14.

Figure Drawing Club
Looking to enhance your drawing skills by working with a live model? Guided by instructor Matt Grimmer, students will have the opportunity to work from life with a model who will strike a variety of poses during this 3-hour, open studio drawing session. Artists are welcome to bring any dry medium art supplies they wish to work with. We will begin with shorter poses to create quick sketches before moving on to longer poses for more finished, detailed works.

Club Create is a program created in partnership with Michigan Arts Access for adults with disabilities. Club Create provides opportunities for adults with disabilities to have hands-on experiences in the arts provided by professional artists. Club members participate in an art experience at each meeting, as well as have time to socialize with other club members. Join instructor Emily Gunning for a tactile exploration of handbuilding in clay. Over this 6-week course, students will explore various methods of building functional or decorative clay vessels without the need for a pottery wheel. Pinch pots, slab, and coil construction will be covered, as well as various methods of achieving surface texture and form for a solid foundation in pottery construction. Projects will be fired off-site and ready for glazing at the final session. All materials are provided, and no prior experience is required. Just bring your curiosity and willingness to get your hands dirty!

Whether you're an experienced artist or trying something new, this class offers a fun and relaxed environment to explore the magic of inks on non-porous surfaces, such as Yupo paper, ceramic tiles, or glass. This class will offer themed sessions recreating imagery on ceramic tiles, and will be finished with a spray-on topcoat for durability.

Ceramic Holiday Ornaments (Week 2)
Unleash your creativity and embrace the spirit of the season in our Ceramic Holiday Ornament workshop! Join instructor Emily Gunning in this fun-filled, tactile experience where you'll sculpt an assortment of holiday-inspired forms in clay. Perfect for any skill level, you’ll be guided through each step, from rolling slabs to surface embellishment, carving & glazing. Leave with a series of handmade ornaments for your home or to share as a thoughtful gift.
In the first class session, we will learn to form shapes from slabs and texturize with clay. The second session will feature a demo on glazing and include time for you to glaze and decorate your pieces. Your ornaments will be fired and ready for pickup at Art Reach the following week, just in time to enhance your home for the holidays.

Test the waters with oil pastel, a low-mess, approachable medium with instructor Annie Croft. Students will have a chance to experiment with their pastels, practice some drawing techniques, and then select a nature picture of their choice. Annie will lead students through the steps of recreating their image and will assist students with finding the right colors and blending for their individual projects. No experience needed!

Copper Book Pendant Workshop
Join jewelry artist Pat Thurston for a creative jewelry-making opportunity for bibliophiles. Using hammered copper and mixed media, students will learn to cut, texturize, and patina miniature book covers, and to assemble them into mini book pendants. Linocut Holiday Cardmaking Workshop
Learn a new skill while creating beautiful cards just in time for the holidays. Instructor Emily Gunning will guide students in designing, carving, and printing their own set of unique holiday cards, perfect for personalized gifting. Drawing from classic holiday imagery, you’ll learn how to carve into linoleum blocks, apply ink, and use printing techniques to print your series of cards. Your linoleum blocks will be yours to keep and reuse for future years. No experience is necessary, and all supplies are provided.

Krampus Short Stories

Fundamentals of Drawing 4 (Week 12)
This is the final course of the four-part Fundamentals of Drawing series with acclaimed artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky. Throughout this course, students will focus on the importance of developing a series of work. We will be discussing why this is important in your development as an artist. You’ll discover how working in a series can broaden and hone your skills. We will touch on Artists’ Biographies, Artists’ Statements, and the difference between the two. You will be guided on how to enter a juried show. Please note- completion of Drawing 1-3 is required to participate in this course.
