Wee Wednesday invites babies, toddlers, and young children to explore art in a relaxed, hands-on environment. Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, this bi-monthly class encourages curiosity and creativity through simple projects that introduce color, texture, and playful materials. Kids can paint, build, stamp, squish, swirl, sing, and experiment at their own pace while caregivers join in on the fun.

Indigenous arts comprise a wide variety of art forms from various original peoples from around the world. Mt. Pleasant is the home to the modern-day Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabek people. This tie to the tribe affords our region a rich history of cultural traditions, as well as various art forms. Art Reach presents a series of classes with the hope of widening our worldview and offering an avenue for sharing this cultural tradition.

Anishinaabe artist and instructor Chyann Haas will explore the art and history of the beadwork tradition of the Anishinaabek people. This first course in the beadwork series will focus on beadwork methods and exploration of materials. Utilizing glass seed beads, students will practice methods of beading on simple patterns, which can expand their beadwork vocabulary and gain the skills to learn more advanced techniques and projects. Basic sewing techniques will be demonstrated, but students should be comfortable with needles. All supplies are provided.

This three-week course will be held from 5:30-7:30 pm on Wednesdays, November 4-18 in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

Teens looking to further hone their acting skills in theater, improv, and more are invited to join Mount Pleasant’s own Tena Gilbreath, a professional actress in Hollywood theatre and Second City improv. Students ages 13-18 who have completed the second course in this series can gain further insight into the theater world and practice the fundamentals of acting through improvisation, scene work, voice acting, character development, and performance techniques. Actors will continue their practice by improving on techniques learned in the second course and build performance experience through creative exercises and theater games.

This 6-week course will be held from 6-9 pm on Wednesdays, November 4-December 17, skipping November 25, in the Morey Family Gallery at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway, Mt. Pleasant, MI.

New to sewing and want to take your first steps toward quilting? Join instructor Kim Bigard for a bite sized quilting project making mini quilts, which can be utilized as placemats, potholders or small wall hangings. If you’re new to machine sewing, you’ll practice basic patchwork by working with strips, improv piecing or a simple log cabin pattern. Students will learn how to create a quilt sandwich, layering the quilt top, batting and backing, and finish with binding your quilt. You’ll experiment with color, patterns and textures and by the end, you’ll have a beautiful, functional art piece you can use.

Students with sewing machines may bring them to use, otherwise Art Reach will provide machines. We will also provide assorted fabrics and thread, but students are welcome to bring fabric in their preferred colorways or scraps to share with the class. No experience is necessary; you will learn all the basics, from threading a machine to decorative top-stitching.

When the temperatures shift downward, the flock moves to the feeder. Appreciate this seasonal shift with color, creativity, and a flock of feathered inspiration! Led by instructor Cheryl Meyer, you’ll focus on capturing the charm, movement, and personality of birds through expressive watercolor painting techniques. Each week in this 3-session course will feature a different backyard bird found at your feeder, and this class will guide you in bringing them to life on paper.

Perfect for beginner to intermediate artists, we’ll explore watercolor fundamentals—such as wet-on-wet, layering, and texture—while also learning how to sketch dynamic bird forms, render feathers, and create harmonious backgrounds. You’ll gain new appreciation for the colorful forms of backyard birds and learn their quirky behaviors when observed up close and rendered in watercolor.

The Wellspring Literary Series featuring author Kelly Fordon will take place at 7 pm Monday, November 9, 2026, in The Morey Family Gallery at Art Reach of Mid Michigan, 111 E. Broadway in downtown Mt. Pleasant.

Fordon is the author of two award-winning short-story collections, "I Have the Answer" and "Garden for the Blind," as well as two poetry collections, "What Trammels the Heart" and "Goodbye Toothless House." Her novella, "Nine Days Left," is scheduled for publication in 2027.

Her writing has appeared in numerous literary publications, including The Kenyon Review Online, The Boston Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, Rattle and The Saturday Evening Post. In spring 2026, Fordon served as a Resident Fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts' Moulin à Nef campus in France.

Synesthesia is the bridging of senses that allows some to see colors in music or experience taste with specific words. Expect to learn more about abstract art, touch on some art history and put these tools to practice with acrylic paint and some music. Figure Drawing Club allows students the opportunity to work at their own discretion in the presence of a live model. This gives students the ability to experiment with their work or simply practice at their own pace. Artist and club monitor Matthew Grimmer will also be available to answer any questions from students as well as provide individual instruction as requested.
Sessions will work with a clothed model who will strike a variety of poses throughout the club and end with a long pose for a final, more detailed drawing.

Students are expected to bring their own drawing supplies and are welcome to work either large or small (most students work from a sketchbook).  Additional supplies can also be provided from the classroom upon request. The classroom will be set with easels, chairs, and tables so that students have the option to sit or stand.

Take the mystery out of the array of colored drawing materials and let us provide an art buffet to sample from! Instructor Annie Croft will lead this workshop in exploring color though assorted drawing media, demonstrating how each material works best. Students will sample from oil and chalk pastels, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, and water-soluble wax pastels to learn how they each function, layer, blend and the amazing colors each can produce. Emphasis is placed on play and experimentation, requiring no prior experience or artistic ability. All experience levels are truly welcome.

Club Create is a program created in partnership with Michigan Arts Access for adults with disabilities. Club Create offers adults with disabilities hands-on experiences in the arts, led by professional artists. If you’d like to participate in a peer-led project, each month will feature a different craft led by the Art Reach TAG. September’s project will be apparel painting. A $5 fee will cover materials to participate in this project. Payment can be made in cash at the open studio or pre-pay online.

When the temperatures shift downward, the flock moves to the feeder. Appreciate this seasonal shift with color, creativity, and a flock of feathered inspiration! Led by instructor Cheryl Meyer, you’ll focus on capturing the charm, movement, and personality of birds through expressive watercolor painting techniques. Each week in this 3-session course will feature a different backyard bird found at your feeder, and this class will guide you in bringing them to life on paper.

Perfect for beginner to intermediate artists, we’ll explore watercolor fundamentals—such as wet-on-wet, layering, and texture—while also learning how to sketch dynamic bird forms, render feathers, and create harmonious backgrounds. You’ll gain new appreciation for the colorful forms of backyard birds and learn their quirky behaviors when observed up close and rendered in watercolor.

Club Create is a program created in partnership with Michigan Arts Access for adults with disabilities. Club Create offers adults with disabilities hands-on experiences in the arts, led by professional artists. The Wellspring Literary Series featuring author Fleda Brown will take place at 7 pm Monday, March 22, 2027, in The Morey Family Gallery at Art Reach of Mid Michigan, 111 E. Broadway in downtown Mt. Pleasant.

Brown is an award-winning poet and author whose work includes 11 full-length poetry collections. Her recent publications include "The End-of-the-Line Club: A Diary," "The End of the Clockwork Universe" and "Doctor of the World," winner of the 2024 Finishing Line Press Chapbook Contest. She is also the author of the award-winning memoir "Mortality, with Friends."

Her poetry has appeared three times in "The Best American Poetry" and has earned numerous honors, including a Pushcart Prize, the Philip Levine Prize and the Felix Pollak Prize. Brown served as poet laureate of Delaware from 2001 to 2007.

Join us for an evening celebrating literature and the written word. This event is free and open to the public.

The Wellspring Literary Series featuring author Eric Torgersen will take place at 7 pm Monday, April 5, 2027, in The Morey Family Gallery at Art Reach of Mid Michigan, 111 E. Broadway in downtown Mt. Pleasant.

This special evening will also feature readings by graduating students from Central Michigan University's MA in Creative Writing program, offering an opportunity to celebrate both an established local author and emerging literary voices.

Torgersen is a poet, novelist and retired Central Michigan University professor who taught creative writing for 38 years before retiring in 2008. He has published seven books of poetry and three novellas, including one written in verse. His scholarly work, "Dear Friend: Rainer Maria Rilke and Paula Modersohn-Becker," has become a standard reference on the subject.

A longtime resident of Mt. Pleasant, Torgersen studied German literature at Cornell University, served in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia and earned his MFA in Poetry from the University of Iowa.
